Bicyclists for Saving the Trees at South Park Blocks, Portland OR

The Issue

Portland’s City Council has developed a “Green Loop” master plan which would destroy 25% of the stately trees of South Park Blocks in your name. We are all in agreement that bicycle road safety should be encouraged and developed. The issue is that it seems paradoxical to cut down a healthy row of historic trees in downtown Portland to make way for an “emissions-free” bike lane.

Currently they are under threat by a citywide Green Loop development and "tree succession plan." A major feature of this plan will result in the cutting down of a large number of the magnificent trees (at least 25% but likely more), increasing hardscape, adding a wide promenade through the middle of the blocks (which requires removal of trees), and placing a bike path inside the western edge of the park, which will damage the fragile roots of these trees.

South Park Blocks was officially Portland's first designated greenspace in 1852, and some of the trees that are slated for removal are 150 years old! To save them your assistance is urgently needed.

These magnificent trees have been good neighbors for over 100 years and multiple generations have enjoyed their presence. We don’t want our generation to be the last one to walk under their amazing canopy.

Bicyclists of Portland formally petition that the City Council to stop this project.
