Anthony Fiore started this petition to The SPF Board Office

On Wednesday February 5, 2020 many parents in Evergreen Elementary School were sent an email by their principal which stated: "Please be advised that starting this week our pizza will no longer be provided from Nick's Pizzeria.  School pizza will now be provided by Bloomfield's Best Bagels. We have been notified that the dough does not contain egg, soy, peanuts or tree nuts.  If your child has a food allergy, please consider the other allergens that may be used at this facility".  It turns out, allergies/allergens were not the reason (see below).

This email came out a full day before Evergreen kids get pizza (Thursdays). McGinn and Coles kids receive pizza on Wednesdays.  McGinn School was not made aware of the change in providers and did not send out an email to parents. Coles did send out a text to parents.

If you look at Bloomfield's Best Bagels menu, you will note that pizza is not on it. They are also located in a different county (Essex) and are 18 miles from SPF.

The above email quickly spread to parents at other SPF schools.  As kids arrived home from McGinn and Coles, they kids reported how terrible the pizza was.  It was cold, it was spicy, it had no sauce, etc... Many kids also stated that they would not be buying pizza again.  Some kids asked, "what happened to Nick's?"  This lead to many many comments and posts on social media (since yesterday) in support of Nick's!

As our community knows, Nick's is very very supportive of our area schools and organizations.  They give never say no.  They support our Boosters, town sports organizations, our PTA and cancer charities just to name a few.

The reason given for the change?  According to Jimmy Del Bene, Food Director, "the decision was made to switch away from Nick's Pizza after numerous complaints of uneven cut slices, crushed pizza boxes when pies were delivered and pies that looked like they were made the day before. I reached out to Nick's each week when the complaints came in and nothing was ever resolved. When I brought it to Nick's attention that the slices were cut unevenly and we needed to have each student receive the same size slice, their response was to "buy more pizza and sort through the good slices"* To me, this is not a resolution.I had also reached out to the board office and made them aware that we will be changing the pizza vendor due to these issues. I would love to keep the business local, but haven't been able to find a local pizzeria that can meet our price point to keep the food costs in line. The pizza that was delivered yesterday was not the quality of pizza that was shown to me when we did a sampling before we decided on a vendor. We went with Bloomfield, because other Pomptonian accounts were using him. I will continue to look for someone locally."  Jimmy specifically said "The decision to move away from Nick's Pizza didn't have anything to do with allergies"

*Note, Nick's has vehemently denied that they ever said buy more pizzas and said that statement is not true.

I believe the reasons above don't justify a move away from Nick's as our school pizza vendor.  The ultimate customers here are our children who love Nick's. If they are happy, we are happy right?  Plus, Wednesday is the day I never have to make lunch and this screws that up royally!

I am asking you to please support a wonderful area business and tell Pomptonian Food Service and our Board office that our kids and their parents want Nick's Pizza back in our schools.  Lastly, if it can't be Nick's then then let it be another one of our amazing LOCAL pizzerias!  Thank you for your support!
