Save Diamond Point Elementary!

The Issue

The Pomona Unified School District is attempting to pass a Consolidation Proposal that will shut down Diamond Point Elementary School. The District is planning to close Diamond Point and send its students to Golden Springs Elementary without a straight forward plan for teachers and staff.

Due to the District's short notice and the lack of a convincing plan or need for this shut down; students, teachers, and families of both Diamond Point and Golden Springs Elementary are very alarmed and strongly opposed to consolidation.

Major Concerns Include:

1. Students have already suffered unprecedented emotional trauma during this Pandemic and these unstable times by having to be away from the school, teachers, and friends they love.  Diamond Point is like a second home our children and removing them from the school forever can be very damaging to their emotional wellness, as many experts have confirmed.

2. There are various safety concerns associated with sending Diamond Point students to Golden Springs Elementary. This includes the additional commuters, especially for students who walk to school and will now have to regularly trek down Golden Springs Drive, a busy street with an increased speed limit and amount of traffic.

3. Both the City of Diamond Bar and the Walnut Sheriff's Department were unaware of this plan by PUSD and need to be involved, alongside Diamond Point families, in this important, potentially life and community-changing decision.

4. Lack of a clear and adequate plan for Diamond Point Teachers & Staff, who have been the heroes of Diamond Point and our students and deserve to be a part of a better, more permanent solution.

5. PUSD cited decreasing attendance and financial concerns, namely a savings of approximately $700,000 with the closing of Diamond Point Elementary. The attendance is still close to 300 students and this number can potentially increase with the option of interdistrict transfers as well as Diamond Point being a top-rated school with quality education and administration. Also, the $ amount mentioned by PUSD is not a significant amount that cannot potentially be mitigated by less dramatic and damaging means.

6. A great deal of $ support for our schools has been promised by our Government, post-covid-19 reopening. So there is no reason to hastily shut down Diamond Point without first reviewing these resources.

7. PUSD mentioned plans for Diamond Point's current site if they close it down. This included housing a Special Education Department, State Preschool Program, and a Virtual School Program. None of these came with solid proposals and PUSD failed to present a proper proposal outlining each of these plans (with required due diligence).

Our schools are NOT For Profit and neither is the well-being or safety of our Diamond Point students. Together we urge PUSD Board members to vote against this consolidation plan and work together with parents, staff, and concerned community members for a better solution!
