The Issue

🚨 TAR BALLS FOUND ON SHORELINE IN CEDAR COVE. POLLUTION HAS STARTED. ACTION IS URGENT.

As of April 12, the Canadian Coast Guard has confirmed that small tar balls have been found on the beach in Cedar Cove.

While they continue to report “no pollution observed in the water,” the presence of tar balls on shore is clear evidence that pollution is already occurring — and the longer this drags on, the worse it could get.

The MSC Baltic III has now been grounded for over 60 days, carrying 1,600 metric tonnes of heavy fuel oil and hazardous cargo including polymer beads — a substance that could devastate marine life and fishing grounds if released.

Rough seas have made salvage efforts by barge unreliable at best, yet the originally proposed land access route — the only practical, weather-resistant solution — has still not been built.

Meanwhile, our wharves are restricted. Our fishing season is disrupted. Our public spaces are impacted. And no one is giving us a clear plan or timeline.

And while interviews have been recorded by national media outlets, nothing has aired.

We are tired. We are worried. And we are now taking action.

Today, we are launching a petition demanding the following:

✅ Immediate construction of a land access route to the MSC Baltic III
✅ Urgent removal of hazardous materials from the vessel
✅ Full transparency and communication with affected communities
✅ Legal and financial accountability from MSC — the ship’s owner

This is not just about Cedar Cove. This is about protecting all of western Newfoundland — its fisheries, coastlines, and communities.

This situation is still developing — overnight. Pollution is now confirmed. We need leadership, answers, and action.
