There is system that was put into place here in Salinas June 1, 2017 called Generation Public Safety radio. At the time Monterey Police Chief Dave Hober said there is a "potential for police ambush"  Which by the way has never happened in Salinas let alone in Monterey county or surrounding county's. In doing so this allowed Salinas police to encrypt there digital radio blocking everyone but law enforcement from lessoning. Ironic that it is called "public safety" when it is encrypted so the public can not have access. This takes away from local cop watchers, news channels and scanner enthusiast to have the ability to be aware of what is happening in our community. We as tax payers that fund the operation to keep our community safe have the right to know what's going on in our community.

The lack of accountability and transparency keeps the distrust between police and the citizens growing everyday. This is a matter of public information we need to hold our police accountable and be allowed public dispatch info. This petition is to stop the encryption of the police scanners allow the people access to public radio. This change will help hold our police accountable and keep our community safe.
