It's nothing less than an international tragedy: it is ruthless. More than half of the elephants on the natural reserve of Bouba N'Djida National Park have been brutally slaughtered, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature. On March 1, Cameroon deployed 150 soldiers to stop the heavily-armed poachers, but the small force is no match for the hunters, who have managed to kill at least 200 elephants so far this year. Elephants are doting parents and gentle, intelligent animals, but they're being killed in unprecedented numbers due to the skyrocketing demand for ivory in China and Thailand. Their numbers have fallen from 3,000 to fewer than 400 in the past 30 years, with no end in sight to the bloodshed.
