On July 11th in Assam, Dr Surajit Giri — popularly known as "Snake Doctor"— who single-handedly saved over 3,000 snakebite victims — was publicly humiliated by a visiting magistrate ACS officer Parishmita Dehingia, who accused him of not doing his duty properly. Incidentally, Parishmita Dehingia was suspended by the Assam Government in 2024 for refusing to follow official orders of posting.
Despite zero complaints and an unblemished record, he was made to stand guilty in front of colleagues, without defense or respect. The ordeal forced him to resign.
It's a shame for the state as well as for the country. We have failed as a country in providing dignified working conditions for doctors.
We need to enforce accountability - Officials and on‑duty authorities must not demean or blame medical staff without due process.
There are reports that after public support and on public demand, Dr Surajit has withdrawn his resignation.
But, administrative assault by the powerful on common public must stop.
