Reserve Indian Information Service (IIS) for Media Professionals
The Issue
Indian Information Service is a service that requires its manpower to have a special set of skills in the field of communication. It may be understood by going through the nature of job, available on the website of ministry of Information & Broadcasting (http://mib.nic.in/WriteReadData/documents/Service_Profile_for_IIS.pdf
If, there may be:
specialized Service for students of Economics (Namely Indian Economic Service),
specialized Service for students of Statistics (Namely Indian Statistical Service),
specialized Service for students of Engineering (Namely Indian Engineering Service),
specialized Service for students of Medical Sciences (Namely Combined Medical Services),
then,
Why not Indian Information Services for the students of Media/Communication???
On one hand, Media students are spending Lakhs of rupees to be trained in communication/ media skills, while on other, government spends almost 8-10 lakh per individual on training of IIS Group A officers.
Why this irony. (This may be seen as loss to the exchequer of Govt of India)
Presently, there is very little scope for media/communication students to join this service (which should really mean for them), that too at only lower levels. After joining the service, they have to stagnate for decades and follow the direction of non professionals. It impacts badly on the efficiency and output of the entire system.
Therefore, it is an urge from the students of media/communication students to the policy makers to kindly think on the issue seriously and make the Indian Information Service a complete Group A Professional Service with a single entry level & make a Degree/Diploma as well as experience in Media/Communication the Compulsory Eligibility Criteria for entry into this Service. That may benefit the Nation as well as the media/communication student fraternity.
Thanks
