Church bells rang across Canada concluding the Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC) presentation in June. Each toll recalled the memory and suffering of approximately 1200 murdered or missing Indigenous woman (MMIW) and the families left behind. Justice Murray Sinclair’s TRC report recommended that a public inquiry into MMIW must be held. However, we see in the news yet another name is being added to the growing list of MMIW. A young woman missing this summer from British Columbia had her full life ahead of her. But, instead, it now appears her hopes and dreams have been destroyed by brutal violence. And no inquiry is in sight!

 No single issue is more urgent that the very real threat being faced by this generation of First Nations women and girls. We ask that Prime Minister Stephen Harper, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, and Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe commit to a MMIW inquiry immediately.

This national disgrace of MMIW must be stopped! The federal parties must commit to an inquiry to facilitate this.
