Stop P-CCS from requiring mixed gender bathrooms and locker rooms
The Issue
The PCCS board of education recently introduced
Policy 5517.03 – TRANSGENDER AND GENDER NONCONFORMING STUDENTS
Here are excerpts from the policy regarding bathroom and locker room policy along with physical education and sports :
Access to Gender-Segregated Activities and Facilities
With respect to all restrooms, locker rooms or changing facilities, students shall have access to facilities that correspond to their gender identity. Schools may maintain separate restroom, locker room or changing facilities for male and female students, provided that they allow all students equal access to facilities that are consistent with their gender identity. Students, including nonbinary students, should determine which facilities are consistent with their gender identity.
Physical Education Classes and Intramural and Interscholastic Athletics
All students shall be permitted to participate in physical education classes and intramural sports in a manner consistent with their gender identity. Furthermore, all students shall be permitted to participate in interscholastic athletics in a manner consistent with their gender identity, under the guidelines established by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).
This means that biological males will be allowed to enter female bathrooms and locker rooms if they say they identify as a female and vice versa.
Biological males will be able to participate in female physical education classes and sports teams and vice versa.
Though we are compassionate toward LGBTQ students and issues, these portions of the policy need to be readdressed using a common sense approach.
There is nothing stopping a non-transgender male from entering the female bathroom or locker room. He simply must say he identifies as a female that day.
This policy is to the detriment of thousands of students in favor of a minority group.
A common sense approach must be taken (ie. dedicated gender neutral facilities).
