PLEASE STOP GOOGLE'S MONOPOLY, NAZI-LIKE TACTICS?
The Issue
Imagine if Ford announced that all mechanics could no longer advertise their repair services for Ford vehicles. Such a move would be astonishing. You, as a qualified mechanic with expertise in Ford repairs, would find your right to promote your skills and business taken away. This scenario seems almost fantastical, as if we are living in a Dr. Seuss upside-down world.
Consider a similar situation: you purchase a new jacket, and after a month or a year, you are prohibited from selling it as used. This would be absurd, as it denies your right to sell something you own. If such a policy were to be enforced, platforms like eBay and the entire used goods market would be at risk of collapse.
Unfortunately, this kind of infringement on rights is occurring in the digital realm. Google has implemented a policy that all computer repair and IT support businesses worldwide cannot advertise their services.
This policy, labeled “Third Party Consumer Technical Support,” ostensibly aimed to prevent fraudulent tech support centers. However, since its introduction in 2018, Google has yet to implement a verification program to assess the legitimacy of companies as they announced they would, leaving countless legitimate businesses—including my own—struggling to survive.
Despite this policy, Google allows systematically some computer repair and support companies to promote their services. Simply google "computer repair" or "computer support" or "IT support" only to see the first 3 or 4 ads promoting these services.
This inconsistency raises concerns about possible discrimination or inefficiencies in Google’s advertising platform. It is perplexing that certain companies seem to bypass the restrictions while others are unjustly blocked.
Notably, Google is currently facing legal action from the Department of Justice and 9 states for its practices related to advertising:
- [NYT: Google Ads Lawsuit](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/24/technology/google-ads-lawsuit.html
- [Reuters: DOJ and States Lawsuit Against Google](https://www.reuters.com/legal/nine-more-us-states-join-justice-department-lawsuit-against-google-over-ad-tech-2023-04-17/
Moreover, Google often blocks individuals from advertising without providing clear reasons, leading to sudden terminations, suspensions and a lack of communication and support in resolving issues. This lack of transparency exacerbates the problem, leaving many businesses without recourse.
Google’s monopoly in the search engine market—holding 98% of internet searches—means that if your business is barred from advertising on Google, your visibility is severely compromised. I shall add that Microsoft, MSN, and Yahoo jumped on the same wagon.
The traditional avenues for advertising, like Yellow Pages, are no longer viable in today’s digital age—and this is not the 70's any longer where you can still go door by door selling your vacuum cleaner or your encyclopedia.
This issue impacts not only small business owners but also the broader public, as we all rely on digital platforms to find services and products. The unchecked power of Google to decide who can or cannot advertise is a threat to fair competition and the livelihood of many. It is a monopoly on the economy.
Please consider signing this petition to hold Google accountable and restore fairness in advertising, in our economy and in the Internet search.
