"Ang Cuyonon ay para sa mga Cuyonon!" (Cuyonon is for the Cuyonos).
No matter how a researcher justifies that she uses scientific method, if it's against the culture and tradition of the people, then it remains unacceptable. A researcher must be open, sensitive and willing to accept the suggestions, criticisms and recommendations of the people. Otherwise, the issue will go on and on.
This Elphick and Sohn Cuyonon Orthography has divided the people. It raises a lot more questions as to why the researchers did the following:
1. Deleted nine letters in the alphabet such as Cc, Ff, Jj, Ññ, Qq, Uu, Vv, Xx and Zz. Who gave them the authority to do so?
2. Imposed the rule that there is no letter U and soft E. Does the scientific research justify this rule without any consent from, of and by the people?
3. Removed Y as an article and replaced it with letter I. Y as an article is what makes us unique as Cuyonos. It has to remain.
The researchers allegedly used this and did that. But does it give them the right to delete nine letters or prevent people from using letters U, soft E and Y? Have they ever thought that the Cuyonos are not just the people of Cuyo and Magsaysay or their surrounding municipalities?
Are they aware that there are three kinds of Cuyonos in Palawan? For instance: the Cuyonos from Cuyo, Magsaysay, Araceli and Dumaran are called Puroanen.
Those who live in the Calamianes Group of Islands are called the Calamianen. Sure! They speak Cuyonon. But there are some words that even a pure Cuyonong Puroanen won't understand when he/she is in Coron or Busuanga.
Last but not the least, the Paraguanen --- or those who live in the mainland. When I was young, we call puppy as "tio-tio" (little doggie). But when I moved to Puerto Princesa City, I learned that puppy is called "paindeng." That's the way they call it all the way to the North.
So, how do we expect the Cuyonos to unite when this kurang-kurang nga alpabeto (incomplete letters in the alphabet) with four vowels without letters U, soft E and Y have divided the Cuyonos big time? Or should I say, a few people from a particular clan wanted to change the customs and traditions of the Cuyonos; thus, this division.
Today, more and more people are signing our online petition. We have also mobilized people from the locals to get a signature campaign so this E & S Cuyonon Orthography may not replace the Ortograpiang Cuyonon that was researched by the DepEd. Let's all help one another! Please sign this petition if you haven't done it yet.
