Please Allow Katelyn Kenitz's Service Dog To Return
The Issue
Katelyn Kenitz is a young woman with PTSD, and her service animal was wrongfully kicked out of Lakeview Apartments just due to the breed of her dog. Katelyn's service dog Xena has faithfully followed her to Michigan Transportation House Committee meetings, meetings with State Senators, on the local public transit busses, into local shopping centers, and even hospital rooms without incident. Xena has recieved many compliments from elected officials, ER staff, neighbors and just people on the street on her behavior.
The landlord claims Xena is an agressive dog. He claimed in writting the dog was barking aggresively at others, but told the news crew a completley seperate story that the dog was chasing other dogs and residents. Xena has never been off leash outside and been unable to chase after other dogs. The leash Katelyn uses is a standard 6 foot leash.
Katelyn uses her dog to help her with severe anxiety attacks, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other things. According to Kates advocate her dog has heavily improved her quality of life making her more able to live independelty.
The American's With Disability Act does not allow for discrimination based on a service dogs breed, nor does the fair housing act. http://www.ada.gov/regs2010/titleII_2010/reg2_2010.html
In Michigan its is a misdemenor to deny a service dog access to any business, apartment, condo, government building, etc.
Katelyn is willing to prove her dog's of good behavior by taking it to local training classes to be certified as a good behaving dog.
Katelyn would like to point out that she believes Lakeview Apartments is a great place to live, and has never had any problems before this with management or staff. Before this incident she would often recommend this apartment complex to friends, and hopes to continue to do so if this is resolved.
