Play Dungeons and Dragons at Cumberland City Council Libraries: Promote literacy and play!
The issue
Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a role playing tabletop game aimed for teenagers and young adults ages 12 years and up. D&D helps with reading, mental maths/probability, problem-solving, creative thinking and socialising in a fantasy environment. Players take a role of a character (premade or they make up) and cooperate with others to solve problems, fight monsters and make moral choices affecting others. The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) encourages D&D and other games similar at libraries as an inclusive way for teenagers to interact with people on a broader spectrum of culture, ability, age, and gender. You wouldn't believe it, but it is about learning and playing together!
In the January 2023 school holidays, Cumberland City Council hosted two Dungeons and Dragons sessions for teenagers. Both programs appeared to be successful with an arrange of books to borrow relating to fantasy and role playing games available. However, no further D&D programs have been shown at the Cumberland City Council 8 libraries since January 2023.
D&D is a great learning and social opportunity for teenagers and young adults to make friends, get reading, develop creative skills for life and be involved in the community. Other library councils in Sydney, such as Willoughby, Campbelltown, Manly, Bankstown, Bayside and Lake Macquarie, provide an opportunity for teenagers and young adults to experience.
We need your help to tell Cumberland City Council Libraries we want D&D back in the library for teenagers (and hey, maybe an adults session too). Not just for learning, socialising and problem-solving, but as a great way to celebrate the end of the busy HSC period, as a school holiday activity or an after-school meetup. If you can, please help us out by signing up, spreading the word, or contacting https://www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/ask-librarian to say why you want to see Dungeons and Dragons back in the libraries!
