Ever since Clarendon has been built, it has not quite matched up to the concept art. More trees need to be planted around Clarendon and Tameside to make a dent in the 976 TONS / 976,000 kg of carbon that Tameside college emits yearly (fig 2023 tameside college streamlined energy and carbon report)

Trees absorb harmful pollutants and release oxygen, making our air cleaner and healthier to breathe. They provide habitat for wildlife and play a crucial role in combatting climate change. Technically, we would need to plant around 97,600 trees in order to offset the colleges emissions. This sounds daunting but we need to start somewhere: Creating greener spaces by planting more trees in the campuses of Clarendon and Tameside Colleges would not only benefit the students and staff but would also make significant contributions to the wider community and even globally as we collectively fight climate change.

For my final art project at college, i want to explore both the positives and negatives of technology; if the benefits of social media bringing people together to make real change outweighs the negatives of how it disconnects us from our environment.

This petition comes from a profoundly personal place. I am driven by a passion for nature and conservation, an urgency prompted by the memory of my dear Nanna “Annie Thursby”, my grandma “Maureen Clark”, her husband “Ken Clark”, my stepdad “Ian Mclean” (along with his deceased relatives,) and my daughter “Raven” who we tragically lost to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (S.I.D.S.) at just 6 weeks old in 2023. Clarendon college has helped to turn my life around- the teachers are amazing, and so is my course. For this reason, I want to give back to the campus. Trees and green spaces have played a significant role in our lives. They are sacred to me, just as I believe they should be to everyone. They are not only symbols of life and growth but also of health and well-being.

I implore CEO Jackie Moore’s not just to consider this petition but to act on it, in honor of those we have lost and for the sake of future generations. Let us create healthier, greener spaces in these campuses. Let the saplings we plant today stand as living memorials and a testament to our commitment to nature, conservation, and our collective well-being. Sign this petition and help us create a greener future.
