Indian Railways Appoint Staff To Clean The Railway Tracks Passing Through Forests.

The Issue

Forests are considered to be the lungs of this planet as they not only act as vital for the existence of the wild animals but also plays a vital role in the sustenance of the human life by protecting the ecology.

Today Indian Railway is one most of the rapid growing Rail network in the world with Railways route length network is spread over 115,000 km, with 12,617 passenger trains and 7,421 freight trains each day from 7,349 stations plying 23 million travellers and 3 million tonnes (MT) of freight daily.

However, with the ever expansion of the Railways through the huge landmass of India there are certain routes where the tracks of Indian Railway passes through protected areas Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks, creating a grave threat to the ecology of these areas. However, it is seen that the government is quite concerned to protect the wild animals of these ECO-SENSITIVE areas by imposing regular speed restrictions upon the trains.

But nothing much can be seen to be done for the cleaning the tracks passing through these ECO-SENSITIVE areas. The RTI replies from several Zones of Indian Railways mention mere advising the passengers and catering staff not to through any waste into the tracks passing through ECO-SENSITIVE areas as a mitigation measure to keep the Tracks clean and green.

As a result of which in reality most of the Railway Tracks passing through ECO-SENSITIVE areas remain uncleaned filled with plastic bottles, chattering wastes, broken eggs, food packets and other forms of plastic wastes etc. Which as a result could not only be harmful to the wild animals but could also damage the ecology of that area.

So, it is therefore requested to that the Indian Railways must take notice of this growing threat to the ecology and adopt measures like the appointment of cleaning staff especially for cleaning the waste thrown into the Railway Tracks passing through ECO-SENSITIVE zones like Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks.
