As Pitzer College, WE are known for our commitment to social and environmental justice, as is reflected in our Core Values and in each and every one of us as future students, current students, alumni, staff and faculty. There is little debate over the relationship between the fossil fuel industry and accelerating climate change. We do not need to go into the numbers here; however, what is important is that we, as the as the Community of Pitzer College, practice what we preach. While we recognize that we are a civilization addicted to fossil fuels and divestment is insignificant in addressing this, complicitly supporting and profiting from these companies is morally incomprehensible. We cannot do this to ourselves in the name of a quick buck.
Pitzer College provides a one of a kind education for its students. We came out of Pitzer with an education that supported critical, perhaps radical, inquiry. Making the commitment to divest from these 200 companies is still a critical, radical, move for colleges to take, and we have the opportunity to join the 6 Colleges and Universities who have already taken this big step. We need to join them.
We are calling on the Board of Trustees to:
1. Immediately freeze any new investment in fossil-fuel companies,
2. Divest within five years from direct ownership and from any commingled funds that include fossil-fuel public equities and corporate bonds.
We are looking forward to helping uphold Pitzer’s moral integrity and continuing to support the Pitzer experience, for all student’s -- and we look forward to the day that we can be proud of where our money is being invested.
