Allow a Hybrid Learning Option for Pitt students

The Issue

Recently, there have been numerous positive COVID-19 cases at the University of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh Campus. Between January 4-11, 2022: 209 students, 205 faculty tested positive. Between January 12-18, 2022: 352 students, 135 faculty tested positive.

With such a high positive test number, students and instructors should follow a hybrid learning style: with the option to decide whether or not to join their courses virtually or in person.

The school environment is a highly transmittable location for COVID-19. On-campus students are staying in the same living quarters. Students may unwillingly be sharing the same living commodities with a COVID-19 positive student. The University COVID-19 Medical Response Office states, "Every new person who gets infected has the potential to host the next variant. Think about it—we are trying to flatten the curve!" Giving students a hybrid learning option will relieve some of the living quarters, allowing students to go home if they feel unsafe.

A total of 901 students and faculty are confirmed to have tested positive within the past 2 weeks. This number should be alarming. If so many students test positive with COVID-19, they may have to miss their courses in order to recover. It would be disruptive to the students' learning and progress in their courses. A hybrid-learning option can relieve some of the challenges associated with this.
