Do not change the name of Dixie Hollins High School to Hollins High School.

Do not change the name of Dixie Hollins High School to Hollins High School.

The Issue

Dixie Hollins High School is named after a man that was ahead of his time in the educational field and the implementation of equal education for all students. Dixie Hollins broke away from Hillsborough County in 1912 and was the first Superintendent to Pinellas County at the age of 25. He has donated land for schools which currently is the home of Madeira Beach Fundamental K-8.  There was a “vote” by the current student body to change the name to Hollins High because the name “Dixie” was being portrayed as racist. The current student body was not capable of making that decision solely based on the name without knowing the history of the school or the man the school is named after. Dixie Hollins ideas and beliefs were rooted before segregation legally ended in 1964 when the Civil Rights Act was passed. I do not believe that the current student body was given the facts about the man, the name or the history of the school and should not have been allowed to make a decision that impacts decades of graduates. It is disrespectful to change the name , because the man , Dixie Hollins still donates to the schools music program. There is more to the name , then just the name! It’s a legacy and we don’t want the name changed!
