Pilgrim's Pride: Stop Putting Poison in Your Poultry

The Issue

Arsenic's health and environmental implications have been well-documented due to recent studies and reports. Despite the poison's toxic reputation, chicken producers still feed roxarsone, an arsenic-based feed additive, to their birds.

According to the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), about 74 percent of non-organic, non-premium chickens sold in grocery stores contain detectable levels of arsenic. Chronic arsenic exposure causes an increased risk of neurological problems in children; cancers of the bladder, liver, prostate, kidneys, and lungs; cardiovascular disease; and diabetes. Arsenic that's eliminated through chickens' waste winds up in soil and groundwater, polluting land, drinking water, and crops.

There's no need to use roxarsone in chickens' feed, and it's certainly not worth the health and environmental risks associated with it. Sign our petition asking Pilgrim's Pride to immediately eliminate its use of roxarsone.
