In this time of restrictions due to the pandemic, we need to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors more than ever. The Whitevale Marsh groups advocates for an amendment of Zoning by-law 3037 (City File A11/15), in order to replace 35 acres of subdivision/development immediately North of the heritage hamlet of Whitevale with the creation of a Nature Park connecting the Seaton trail and the valley of West Duffins and to also present a proposal for an additional trail head and parking lot accessible off North road.

The Seaton Trail and the natural areas of Whitevale and West Duffins Creek are increasingly enjoyed by many who are rediscovering the importance of the outdoors and green space in this time of pandemic. Even before COVID-19, people have been hiking in greater numbers. Arriving from Pickering, Markham, Unionville, and beyond, they are using the Seaton trail and the unmarked paths of the naturalized marsh and former gravel pit.  Over the years, we have also all observed that the parking situation at the Whitevale Community park has been horrendous, especially during weekends. Cars park along Whitevale Road, (both sides of the bridge), North Road, Altona and the back street, presenting a safety hazard to fellow hikers and the community. The Green River north trailhead along Highway 7 is also bursting with cars parked along the shoulder, as the parking area is inadequate.

Old and new Durham residents, as well as visitors, will all benefit from an amendment of Zoning by-law 3037 (City File A11/15), creating a Nature Park, facilitating access to the Seaton Trail for the broader community and mitigating the potential risks to the West Duffins Creek Watershed.
