The Voice of Phoenix recently shared a disturbing video on social media wherein we exposed the conditions at the Phoenix Sizakala Centre ("the rent offices") where the poor, elderly, and infirm are subjected to unnecessary hardships.

Visiting these offices is supposed to be a simple process of obtaining necessary services from our local government, yet it has become an ordeal due to prolonged wait times and the looming possibility of being turned away without assistance. This situation reflects a fundamental lack of respect and dignity for individuals who depend heavily on public services.

A glaring violation lies in the condition of the public toilets within these government buildings. These facilities are not just inadequate; they are unsafe, and visitors are explicitly warned to use them at their own risk. It is both humiliating and unacceptable to ask citizens to endure such indignity in facilities meant to serve them. Alongside this, there are numerous other health and safety violations which put everyone at risk and degrade the standard of living.

VOP had written a formal request to the eThekwini Municipality and heads of department with a 7 working day turnaround time to respond to our request to look into the poor service, delivery, health and safety violations, long wait times, dilapidated lavatories, and overall lack of safety and security. TO THIS LETTER WE HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE, NOT EVEN AN EMAIL TO ACKNOWLEDGE RECEIPT OF OUR LETTER!

This petition is a call to action for our municipal authorities to prioritize the safety, dignity, and efficiency of services at Phoenix municipal offices. We demand concrete repairs to the toilet facilities to ensure they are functional and safe for all users. These repairs should include fixing plumbing issues, enhancing sanitation measures, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. Beyond immediate repairs, there should be established service standards to improve wait times and guarantee that no individual is turned away without proper support. Such standards should involve the implementation of clear procedural guidelines and regular staff training to foster a supportive and responsive environment.

This is not just about fixing broken toilets; it's about restoring faith in our public institutions and ensuring that everyone's basic rights are respected. Our local government has the responsibility and resources to make these changes rapidly. We must hold them accountable for providing the minimal standards of dignity and safety that every citizen deserves.

I urge you to support this cause by signing this petition. By adding your voice, you can help drive the necessary changes to improve conditions at Phoenix municipal offices for everyone, particularly the most vulnerable. Together, we can ensure a more respectful and supportive environment for all those who require these vital public services. Sign the petition now and demand a commitment to actionable improvements.
