Ban Native American Mascots in Vermont Public Schools

Ban Native American Mascots in Vermont Public Schools
The Issue
Vermont - It is time to ban Native American mascots in our public schools. These images are harmful and do not honor anyone. We need to be teaching the real story of our Indigenous People, and not holding on to culturally insensitive stereotypes.
Do Vermont students know anything about the history of our Indigenous people in the US? How many of our students can name more than 3 of the 572 recognized
Native American tribes in America? How is this mascot an appropriate symbol if you have no connection or understanding of Indigenous people?
We need to start with educating our youth so that people can understand why this change needs to happen. Things are different today. We know the stories - and if you don’t, I encourage you to do your own research. Education will help you understand why some “traditions” need to change.“Traditions” like Aunt Jemima and the Land O Lakes Indian Maid are finally being replaced. At long last, the confederate flag is coming down.
Did you know that our current Poet Laureate in the United States, Joy Harjo, is Native American? We also recently elected our first Native American Congresswomen, Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids. Show our Indigneous people the respect they deserve. These are people. People in our communities. They are not relics from history, or mythical creatures to emulate. We respectfully request this important change that shows that Vermont is willing to grow and respond to the call for change and for eliminating language and symbols that help to uphold racially insensitive stereotypes and images. Make a new "tradition" out of respect for all people.
