Stop the train noise for residents in Central+Oak and other areas of East Rutherford NJ

The Issue

As an East Rutherford, NJ resident living in the Central+Oak Apartment Complex, the issue we face is the excessive train noise throughout the day. We understand train horns are for safety precautions, but it is also a nuisance for us residents.

I have a toddler who is very sensitive to noises, and hearing the train horn every 1-2 hours during these challenging times doesn't help. We also have other residents of all ages living in the same complex area who are getting headaches and waking up in the middle of the night from the train noises. Our neighborhood is also where children go to school, and they must get their rest.

We would want to establish a permanent or even a partial quiet zone with a schedule for the weekdays and weekends. Our public crossings are equipped with traffic gates, lights and ringing bells to stop the flow of vehicular traffic, so trains don't have to blow the horns as long as they do and at all times. Even as much as toning down the dB level would help. Resolving this issue will help residents settle down, grow families, and enjoy the yearly street fairs near Rutherford Station and support local businesses. I could see this new building and other homes losing their value and customers if it doesn't get resolved soon. We are a strong community, and if we see any issues with the gates and ringing bells, we will be happy to report it.

So, I am asking our Mayor of East Rutherford, Jeffery Lahullier, and our Governor, Phil Murphy, to take this manner seriously to keep our residents and us happy and safe. Please, NJ residents, sign this petition if you want to reduce noise pollution.
