Allowing Spouses in Labor & Delivery

Hospitals in NJ are beginning to implement rules stating that no spouses or support persons are allowed in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Neonatal units. This is barbaric! It is a fathers basic human right to be there for the birth of their child. The baby is just as much theirs as it is the mothers, and denying them the right to witness the birth of their child and support their wife is wrong.

What everyone seems to forget when these rules are made is that MANY pregnancies have complications. Emergency c-sections, hemorrhages, premature birth and more.
There are many women who have suffered unimaginable losses. I myself had to deliver my twins last year at 22 weeks due to preterm labor and lost them shortly after. There are women going through this every day , and you are going to deny them the right to have their spouse or support person by their side through these horrible tragedies? Had my husband not been allowed in last year, he would have never gotten the chance to meet and hold his babies before they died.

Fortunately my husband was there. We are now pregnant again and due in May and this time I will not stand by and let him be robbed of his right to be there for the birth of HIS child. We both relive the moments of our last delivery every single day. We BOTH deserve the chance to have a new memory of child birth for our mental health and well being.

We are just ONE story. Every family has their own story and their reasons, but the one thing we all have in common is the fact that whether it’s 1st child, 3rd child or 8th child, every mother deserves to have support and every father deserves to be able to support her.
