Willow Residents started this petition to Phil Allt and June Hofland.

We are writing to ask for help in raising and organizing our voices in a building process that has excluded us and not asked about our values and needs. We do not have a video, staff, or any money, but we do live right here next to the proposed housing project. We will continue to live here, and we have dreams for our children, neighborhood, and concerns for this development.

We have not been asked about this project. There are private meetings. There are big agencies supporting this project, like the United Way, and the Mayor is ready to put a shovel in the ground and start building immediately. It sounds like a done deal. We ask, in supporting this project, is anyone taking into considering or valuing the cost to us in the neighborhood? What does this do to our neighborhood?

We are writing to let you know that we have had no say.

We are writing to let you know that we are tired of having things done to us and for us in our own neighborhood.

Because we are old, poor, new Canadians, immigrants and marginalized neighborhood families it might be easier to get things passed and done. We don’t have any voice or power. We are not blind to what is going on. We want to tell everyone that this is not a fair process.

There is also fear. Fear of losing housing because of speaking up and living in a Skyline building, fear of losing a job at Shelldale, or GCHC, whose landlord is Kindle, and fear of the foundational agencies we rely on, who are working together, to make this development happen, no matter what.

We live in this neighborhood, we have values and visions that should have a say and focus in what happens in our families backyard. We would like to see more than the talk about “Building Back Better after the Pandemic”. We want to see changes now, in how things are done. With us, in a meaningful way. Not to, and for us.
