Why is PHD relevant besides academia? Are times changing?

The Issue

PhD in management is the highest academic degree awarded in the study of management science. It is a degree meant for those who seek in-depth knowledge in a specific area. Although academia is considered to be the most preferred option for any PhD holder, the degree also opens up various options for a career in industries centered on research and innovation. The minimum and maximum period of study and research shall be three and six years, respectively from the date of registration of the students.

There are a number of academic institutions/universities that render quality Management PhD programmes with specialisation in Finance/Accounting, Economics, Marketing, Human Resources/Organisational Behaviour, Operations Management/Decision Science, Strategy/Entrepreneurship, among other options. Candidates pursuing their Management PhD are usually required to complete a dissertation based on their own research that provides a significant contribution to the field.

The prime objective of PhD in Management is to produce graduates skilled in research with both theoretical and practical understanding of multifaceted problems that businesses are facing around the world. Interdisciplinary approach, issue-focussed courses provide a holistic perspective to defining and solving problems and this is exactly what universities of global repute aim for these days.

How is PHD changing the way world functions?

Ph.D. in Management Admission is conducted across the country in various colleges. However, only a few offer research, and have collaborations of highest standards with global universities, and house world-class faculty. The vision of premier universities of India is to impart global business education where students are equipped with necessary and requisite knowledge, acumen and skills to effectively tackle challenges faced by businesses across sectors. Multi-disciplinary global business education where academic excellence is fostered, industry partnerships are established and global collaborations are made to enhance the quality of education are some prime aspects of any university rendering quality education. Since, PHD is a degree of extensive research and nuances of a field, proper guidance and mentorship is required to achieve desired result and this is only guaranteed by colleges with best rankings and great repute.

Ph.D. in Management Eligibility includes Masters Degree or any other degree recognised equivalent thereto in (a) Business Administration or Economics or Commerce or in allied subjects or in Engineering/ Technology with at least 55% marks OR (b) Post Graduate Diploma in Management recognised as equivalent to MBA by AICTE with 55% marks or equivalent grade therein.

Besides that, professional qualification such as CA/ ICWA/ CFA/ CS (both 5 year integrated or 3 years after graduation) with minimum 55% marks is required. Applicants with more than 3 years industry/teaching/practicing/managerial/professional experience are given preference.
