Phasing out fossil fuels in 10 years: Global Climate Tax and Cash

The Issue

Less CO2 and lower energy bills, better economy. Getting to near-zero in less than 10 years, affordable for everyone.

We want a Global Climate Tax starting at $100 per ton of CO2e, rising by $100 every year, to finance a rapid transition to a clean energy. 50% of the generated tax revenues invested in renewable energy infrastructure, and 50% immediately redistributed in cash to the people (per capita) to ensure rising cost do not affect the poorer segments of the population.

Heat, droughts, rain bombs, hail, monster storms and floodings threaten our health and our food. Our existence as organised society is at stake. Global Warming is here and it is accelerating. We have the technology, the financial means, and the political tools to change our polluting energy system. It is time we use them.

We demand:

  1. CO2 & other grenhous gases are taxed. The climate tax is levied EVERYHWERE, globally, at the same rate per ton of CO2 equivalent
  2. The tax is gradually introduced – starting at U$ 100 per ton of CO2e increasing by U$ 100/tCO2e every year – to allow the economy to adjust
  3. The tax is levied & redistributed at country level, at the point of emissions (end-consumer, similar to VAT)
  4. ALL tax revenues are redistributed, completely fiscal neutral as follows:
    1. 50% cash-back, re-distributed regressively (low income brackets receive higher cash-back) to balance the temporarily increasing energy bill
    2. 40% for building renewable energy infrastructure (excluding nuclear, bio-fuels and carbon capture technologies)
    3. 3% for R&D and mitigation
    4. 7% in a global fund in support of the poorest and most vulnerable nations
  5. Agriculture contributes 15-25% of global GHG emissions. Meat and dairy products therefore need to be taxed according to their associated CO2e emissions
  6. Countries that do not participate in a global climate tax scheme are taxed a flat import tariff of at least 30% on all imports. These tariffs will be redistributed to the population as cash-back
