Our coasts have been my playground and sanctuary, but they're under threat from the staggering volumes of plastic pollution that's being dumped into our waters every year. This has a solution, and it's high time we made it a reality by enforcing the use of biodegradable plastics.

Australia has access to innovative biodegradable plastic technologies that could prove transformative for our country's environmental health. Unlike traditional plastics, these biodegradable materials are designed to decompose in natural environments like soil and water drastically faster, curtailing the amount of debris that reaches our waterways. It's distressing to realize that if we continue at the current rate of plastic waste, scientists predict that by 2050, there'll be more plastic than fish in the ocean. 

Each year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter our oceans. This isn't just a local problem; it's a global crisis affecting ecosystems and human health worldwide. However, we. need to start somewhere we have the power and the responsibility to set a precedent for others to follow. By mandating the use of biodegradable plastics across industries, we can reduce our plastic footprint and protect our marine heritage.

We are calling on the Australian Government and major manufacturers to shift our focus toward certified biodegradable plastics for everyday items like packaging, shopping bags, and single-use containers.
However, we understand that a complete ban is not realistic.

Practical Waterproof Exceptions: Non-biodegradable plastics should still be allowed, in limited capacities, for essential items that come into constant contact with water (such as water bottles and specialized medical or industrial equipment).

Industrial Composting Infrastructure: We recognize that many biodegradable plastics require specialized, high-heat industrial composting facilities to decompose properly. We demand that this transition include government investment into widespread commercial composting infrastructure so these materials don't just end up in standard landfills.

Reducing Overall Waste: While switching to safer materials is a massive step forward, our ultimate goal must also include reducing Australia's overall reliance on single-use plastics by encouraging reusable alternatives.
