Pets at home to start selling appropriately sized Hamster cages only.

The Issue

Pets at home continue to spread false information about the appropriate care of Hamsters. They continue to sell unsafe products, wrong sized cages and keep their hamsters in inappropriate conditions despite there being plenty of information around regarding the proper Hamster care. This results in Hamsters receiving inefficient care throughout their lives leaving them unhappy and uncared for.

The minimum cage requirement has been suggested to be 620 square inches which is about 80 x 50cm. This should be of unbroken floor space and as big as possible. One cage that pets at home sell that is appropriate is the savic plaza but unfortunately the majority of their cages are not appropriate. As well as this, they are given inappropriate wheels which can cause a lot of health problems. A lot of Hamster behaviours like bar biting and bar climbing are signs of boredom and a cage that is too small but pets at home do not tell their customers this and so their Hamsters suffer.

I have had three Hamsters who have all lived happily in a savic Hamster cage full with enrichment. My first Hamster, Hamilton, was from pets at home and spent 2 weeks living in an incorrect cage with an incorrect wheel. I stumbled across YouTube videos and discovered that what I had been told was correct from pets at home had resulted in him living in cruel conditions. I upgraded his cage and wheel as soon as I could and he was so much happier and friendlier straight away. I discovered that the majority of what pets at home sell is more money focused rather than actually looking out for the well-being of the Hamster.

Hamsters are seen as starter pets but they are living beings with hearts and feelings. Their life is short and they deserve to have a good one. When you take on a Hamster, you are all they have to ensure they not only survive but also live. You wouldn't leave a dog in a cage all day or a cat in a cat carrier for its entire life. Don't let a Hamster spend its life in a cage that is too small.
