The Bad News…
This week, we received the results of the speed survey undertaken in 2019 which shows the speeds recorded in just under a week on Cottimore Lane.
We have reviewed the data and below are the main key findings:
- On Average, 39.4%, more than 1 in 3 vehicles broke the speed limit on Cottimore Lane.
- Highest recorded speed = 88mph (yes, you read that correctly 58mph over the limit)
- In less than a week, 821 vehicles travelled at speeds in excess of 40mph.
The results were much worse than we had anticipated and we were flabbergasted that a vehicle was recorded travelling at 88mph (almost three times the speed limit) and that so many others were recorded at speeds in excess of 40mph.
Taking into consideration the speed survey results, the calls to review speeding in the area dating back as far as 1998, and the numerous enquiries and concerns raised, we are absolutely astonished and at a loss as to why the issue of speeding on Cottimore Lane was not addressed years ago.
The Really Good News…
Following a lengthy conversation with Surrey County Councillor Rachael Lake last week, we appear to have made some substantial progress... Councillor Lake now understands that the residents do not feel safe, that this is a genuine concern and we all deserve to feel safe where we live.
As a result, we are pleased to report that it has been confirmed that a budget is available and some of the measures have been applied for!
These include:
- Two vehicle activated signs
- Two ‘speed enforcement area’ signs
- Flat painted speed bump markings
- Slow road markings
Separately, Councillor Lake is also looking into installing small wooden bollards to stop cars parking on the green verges along Cottimore Lane, close to the junction with Terrace Road. We wish to make it clear that we have not asked for this as part of the campaign and we have not made any representations whatsoever for this measure to be implemented.
Tune in Tomorrow…
The application for the road safety measures is of course brilliant news, but our mission now is to ensure that Surrey County Council follows through and in a timely manner.
Hopefully we will get an update on when they anticipate these will be installed and we will certainly not be taking our foot off the pedal until we see the measure in place and working.
Speaking of which, we have been invited to discuss the issue on Brooklands Radio TOMORROW – WEDNESDAY 22ND FEBRUARY AT 11:30 as well as BBC Radio Surrey next week which should hopefully help raise awareness of the issue and keep it on their agenda. Please tune in if you can.
Thank you so much again for your support and watch this space for more updates!
