The Issue

In a world that feels more polarized than ever, there are few things left that defy political boundaries and unite us all; one of those is Flock. Flock's network of over 120,000 Al-powered cameras spans all across the United States, including the two placed near the entrance and exit of our school, neither of which points at the road. It would be one thing if the data collected on students was kept in a database only the school and our local government had access to, but it is sent to data centers across the country, using our tax dollars to train a mass surveillance system.

This petition is not against security systems or cameras. When students go to school, we accept that our right to privacy is significantly reduced, but allowing a private company to use students in order to train its Al surveillance system goes far beyond keeping students and our community safe. School is an environment students and faculty should feel both safe and welcome in. Worthington Schools have done an outstanding job in nurturing that. Unfortunately, Flock's surveillance systems have a negative impact on the environment all of us wish to see our school thrive in. Americans have been taken advantage of by tech corporations for far too long. By signing this petition, you are doing your part to fight back. Together we can urge the district to cancel its contract with Flock and restore privacy for students and staff.

Thank you for reaching out and for bringing the petition and the concerns of its signers to my attention. The safety and security of our schools is an ongoing conversation for the Board, as is our responsibility to protect the privacy of our students and families. I appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from members of our community and am sharing the petition with the full Board and Superintendent Bowers for additional awareness. Thanks, Amber Epling-Skinner Board of Education [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters.
