The Issue

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPTER PRESIDENT: Dear Fremont High Community,

As the President of the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter at Fremont High, I am reaching out to address a serious concern that has deeply affected our club and our community. We have witnessed aggressive attacks and harmful comments directed at individuals and groups in response to recent discussions and events. I want to emphasize that such behavior is contrary to the values of our organization and does not honor the memory or vision of Charlie Kirk, whose legacy inspires us to advocate for freedom, equality, and justice.

Our TPUSA chapter is dedicated to fighting for equal status under the law for all individuals, regardless of identity or beliefs. Our mission is to foster understanding, encourage open dialogue, and create a more inclusive environment where everyone’s voice is heard. Bringing issues to light is about raising awareness and promoting constructive change, not inciting division or hostility. We firmly believe that Charlie would have wanted us to approach these challenges with respect, compassion, and a commitment to unity.

We urge our community—students, staff, families, and supporters—to join us in rejecting aggression and divisive rhetoric. Let us instead engage in respectful, meaningful conversations that uplift and strengthen our community. Together, we can build a Fremont High that reflects the principles of fairness and dignity we strive for.

If you have concerns, questions, or ideas about how we can work together to advance our shared goals, please reach out to our TPUSA chapter. We are here to listen and collaborate. Let’s honor Charlie’s vision by creating a community where everyone is treated with respect and equality.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Sincerely,

Brigham Stander

President, Fremont High Turning Point USA (TPUSA)

* * *updated information* * *

Here is the information we have after meeting with school administration Monday.

It has been clarified that Turning Point USA (TPUSA) at Fremont High School was originally registered as a group. It is now using the “group” designation to restrict access to opportunities normally afforded to clubs, even though the students’ purpose and activities remain educational and consistent.

Administrators explained that under district policy, clubs must be tied to an academic class—like Latinos in Action is tied to a course. While TPUSA focuses on government, civil liberties, and civic engagement, Fremont already offers a U.S. Government class, so students are effectively being penalized for pursuing learning outside the classroom.

Additionally, the current district policy refers only to “groups” and omits any language about student-led clubs, which is inconsistent with state law (§ 53G-7, Utah Code) that protects student organizations from viewpoint discrimination and guarantees equal access. This discrepancy means the district is using its policy to deny opportunities to students in ways that conflict with state protections.

Under the “group” designation, TPUSA students are being denied access to school functions and resources normally given to clubs, including: participation in Back to School Night and Homecoming events, including the parade, use of buses for field trips, excused absences for field trips and educational activities.

TPUSA is a national student educational organization. It teaches young people about the Constitution, free speech, limited government, and civil liberties, while encouraging students to engage in civic life, participate in leadership opportunities, and become informed, responsible citizens. These students are not there to divide, but to learn, discuss ideas, and grow as leaders.

This is not the first time TPUSA students in Utah have faced obstacles. In 2022 at Copper Hills High School, administrators attempted to restrict their TPUSA chapter without proper notice or fair process until Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) intervened to protect the students’ rights. That case demonstrates that schools cannot apply rules unevenly or discriminate based on viewpoint, and Fremont should not repeat the same mistake. https://adflegal.org/press-release/utah-high-school-students-seek-equal-treatment-their-conservative-group/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

We call on Fremont High School and Weber School District to:

Guarantee equal access to school functions, buses, excused absences, and other resources for TPUSA students, just as other clubs receive.
Provide written notice of any rule violations and allow students to appeal decisions fairly.
Update district policy to acknowledge student-led clubs and groups in accordance with state law and ensure consistent treatment.
Uphold fairness and protect students’ right to learn and participate without being silenced.
Whether TPUSA is classified as a club or a group, these students deserve equal treatment. Please sign this petition to support fairness, equal access, and the right of Fremont students to learn and lead.

You can also email the school directly, but we ask that all communication remain civil and respectful.
