Why this petition matters
Started by Michelle Taranda
- We believe small businesses, including Bank of Books, are important to the City of Ventura and should not be forced out due to abnormally high rent increases.
- We believe developers and investors in this community should weigh their involvement with consideration to the existing businesses and the current economy and set their rent accordingly.
- We believe that an over 325% rent increase, as what what thrust upon Bank of Books, does not show respect or support to the existing business.
- We believe the owner of Bank of Books, Clarey Rudd, is an advocate for our businesses. His recent campaign in the support of the restaurant industry was eating at 150 local eateries and promoting them on Facebook, encouraging the owners and staff.
- Clarey Rudd was the founding chairman of the Downtown Ventura Organization. The DVO helped bring safety to downtown, making it a cleaner place and helping the homeless by bringing together different agencies. He continued to reach out to the victims of the Thomas Fire by creating a Community Help section at the bookstores and offering free books to the survivors.
- Clarey Rudd, historically, promoted literacy by giving away, free, over 300,000 books. He seeks local authors to promote their work with book signings and has hosted hundreds of book signings.
- We believe that small businesses are important to a healthy Ventura. Bank of Books is an institution. It has been rooted in downtown for 60 years of business.
- We believe City Council has a responsibility to protect the small businesses since the property owners and landlords can change the dynamics of the city without regard to the benefits and needs of the city.
- We believe Downtown Ventura should maintain its historical ambiance and character for tourist interest and for all visitors. Bank of Books offers something that few cities have and should be retained.
- We believe Bank of Books has been committed to the betterment of Downtown Ventura. An option for the preservation of Bank of Books is for the developer to build around Bank of Books.
- We believe Bank of Books is Evidence that property owners are not taking into consideration the value of existing small businesses that bring revenue to Ventura.
- We want Ventura City Council to help small businesses by creating protection for them and we seek such help for Bank of Books, a new, rare and used books provider, to remain at its present location.
