The Issue
I was told I had to shut down my Airbnb that is on my own property and within my own house. My husband and I loved having guests rent out our finished basement apartment and were shocked to have someone tell us what we had to do with our own property that we own and pay taxes on.
We, the undersigned, respectfully petition the Milford Township to update zoning laws to permit responsible short-term rentals (such as Airbnb and VRBO) under reasonable regulations.
Why?
•Supports the local economy by attracting visitors who spend money at restaurants, shops, and attractions.
•Provides homeowners with flexibility and supplemental income to afford property taxes, utilities, and upkeep.
•Expands tourism options and helps welcome visitors to Mount Vernon.
•Encourages property maintenance and investment in neighborhoods.
•Can be responsibly managed with occupancy limits, parking rules, and safety inspections.
Requested Action:
Amend the zoning code to:
Permit short-term rentals in residential zones as a conditional use with city registration.
Establish reasonable regulations to address safety, parking, and noise.
Enforce rules through existing nuisance and zoning ordinances.
This approach balances property rights, community needs, and economic growth for Mount Vernon.
