Science Fiction is everywhere, pervading and inspiring all human culture in our era.
Known as “the literature of our time”, “the literature of ideas”, “the fiction of change”, it is the only literary genre which focuses upon the true nature of our era and which treats of the scientific knowledge and the technological expertise which let us completely transform ourselves and our world.
"Science fiction can be defined as that branch of literature which deals with the reaction of human beings to changes in science and technology." - Isaac Asimov
For the past two centuries, such fiction has fed upon scientific knowledge, imagining and projecting and speculating upon futures, realities, dilemmas, and scenarios which we wish for or which we fear.
While advances and discoveries in all areas of human knowledge influence authors, script-writers, and every kind of artist in all realms of creative human activity, books and films and TV series and comics inspire generations of scientists, engineers, researchers, and artists in the discovery of their vocations and in the paths which their ideas take and the ways they formulate their enquiries.
"Today's science fiction, is often tomorrow's science fact. To confine our attention to terrestrial matters would be to limit the human spirit." - Stephen Hawking
Examples and witness to such influence are of public record, as is the ever more widespread use of science fiction as an effective resource as regards the popularisation of science and science-based journalism, as well as in the educational sphere where its practical application extends from university lecture rooms to primary schools.
"I believe that the same thirst for wonder is inside me that was there when I was ten. I find that science fiction has led me to science." - Carl Sagan
Distilled from that playful region where the essence of any human creativity activity bubbles, science fiction is not only an enriching entertainment for one's spare time but is a powerful source of creativity, of mental exercise, and one of the most powerful and effective teaching vehicles and enlighteners of our time.
Accordingly we call for the establishment of an "International Day of Science Fiction", for which we propose 2 January, the birthday of Isaac Asimov, a figure who brings together, and thus represents, all the aspects indicated in this short statement.
"The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible." - Arthur C. Clarke
