PETITION TO THE VALLEY STREAM BOARD OF EDUCATION: DEMANDING ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY REGARDING TRUSTEE OVERREACH AND CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

To the Esteemed Members of the Valley Stream Board of Education and Superintendent:

We, the undersigned concerned parents, community members, and stakeholders of the Valley Stream Central High School District, are deeply troubled by a pattern of alleged overreach and conflicts of interest exhibited by certain Board Trustees. We believe that these actions undermine the integrity of our school district, erode public trust, and ultimately jeopardize the best interests of all students.

Board Trustees are elected to represent the entire student body and community, not to leverage their positions for personal gain or to benefit their own children. The following documented instances raise serious questions about the ethical conduct and appropriate boundaries of power within our Board:

Undue Influence on Honor Society Policy: A Board Trustee used her influence to change the district’s honor society credit policy, reducing the required volunteer hours from 33 to 20. This change occurred when her son was facing removal from honor societies due to insufficient credits, allowing him to maintain his standing. This raises concerns about policy changes being driven by personal interest rather than broad student benefit.

Alleged Retaliation Against Staff: A Board Trustee was escorted from a school sport event due to his disrespectful and disruptive behavior. Following this, the teacher involved in his removal faced disciplinary action for a minor issue related to the Trustee’s son. While a retaliation charge was filed and the process dropped, the incident highlights a troubling pattern of potential misuse of authority against school staff.

Misuse of Power in Disciplinary Matters: A Board Trustee had initiated disciplinary charges against a now retired school secretary, alleging dangerous driving. Despite an investigation by the principal and security cameras clearing the secretary, the Board Trustee escalated the complaint to the superintendent, resulting in a disciplinary letter for the secretary, who accepted it unwillingly during her retirement process. This suggests a pursuit of personal grievances through official channels.

Unwarranted Escalation Against a Teacher: A Board Trustee has repeatedly escalated complaints against a science research teacher, even after two separate investigations by the principal and superintendent cleared him of wrongdoing. She accused him of intentionally disqualifying her son from a research competition and demanded his removal from the program, which ultimately occurred. Further allegations of "emotional trauma" were made, despite her own son not corroborating the story. This appears to be a persistent and potentially baseless campaign against a teacher.

Breaching Graduation Protocol for Personal Benefit: A Board Trustee intervened to allow her son to wear an outside-of-school achievement at graduation, despite a long-standing policy that only honor society cords were permitted. This resulted in an exception being made for a specific individual, overriding established tradition and policy for personal preference.

We understand and appreciate a parent's desire to advocate for their children. However, when those parents hold elected positions on the Board of Education, their actions must unequivocally serve the interests of all students and the entire community, free from perceived or actual conflicts of interest. The documented instances above, which occurred outside the sight of the community, suggest a concerning pattern where personal agendas may be overriding the responsibilities of public service.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, respectfully demand that the Valley Stream Board of Education and the Superintendent take the following actions:

Conduct an immediate and transparent investigation into the allegations of trustee overreach and conflicts of interest, as outlined above, and any other similar instances that may exist.
Review and strengthen existing policies regarding conflicts of interest, ethical conduct for Board Trustees, and appropriate procedures for addressing complaints involving Trustees' personal interests.
Implement clear, publicly accessible guidelines on how the Board addresses potential conflicts of interest when Trustees' personal or family matters intersect with district policy or personnel.
Increase transparency in Board operations, particularly concerning decisions or complaints that involve individual Trustees or their immediate family members.
Re-evaluate the decision to remove the teacher from the Science Research Program in light of the apparent pattern of alleged overreach by the Board Trustee.
Ensure that all disciplinary actions and policy changes are based solely on objective facts and the best interests of the entire student body, free from personal bias or influence.
We believe that a strong, ethical, and transparent Board of Education is fundamental to providing the best educational environment for our children. We urge you to take these concerns seriously and act swiftly to restore trust and ensure accountability within our district leadership.

To those signing this petition, we strongly encourage you to amplify your support by filing a formal complaint with the Board of Education, the superintendent of Valley Stream Central High School District, Dr. Wayne Loper, and the deputy superintendent, Dr. Jennifer Dimaio. Complaints can be directed to the following email addresses:

loperw@vschsd.org
dimaioj@vschsd.org
In addition there is a Board of Education Meeting on July 8th at 8pm. You can direct your questions and make your opinion felt even more strongly there.

Sincerely,

The Concerned Parents and Community Members of Valley Stream
