Petition to Support Tiny Homes on the North Fork of Long Island

The Issue

To: Town Boards and Local Zoning Authorities of the North Fork of Long Island
From: Concerned Residents, Advocates for Affordable Housing, and Environmental Stewards
Subject: Legalizing and Zoning for Tiny Homes as a Sustainable and Affordable Housing Option

We, the undersigned, petition for the legalization and integration of tiny homes on the North Fork of Long Island.

The North Fork is a region known for its natural beauty, agricultural roots, and strong community values. However, the rising cost of housing has made it increasingly unaffordable for local workers, young adults, retirees, and long-time residents to continue living in the area they love and serve.

We believe tiny homes offer a thoughtful, responsible solution to this growing housing crisis.

Why We Support Tiny Homes:
Affordable Living: Tiny homes provide lower-cost housing for teachers, artists, service workers, seniors, and others who contribute to our community.

Sustainable & Low Impact: Tiny homes have a smaller carbon footprint and often use eco-friendly materials, solar power, and less land and water.

Smart Land Use: With proper zoning, tiny homes can be built on unused lots, placed as ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units), or added to cooperative land projects without disrupting the rural charm of the North Fork.

Community Building: Tiny home villages or clusters can foster a strong sense of belonging, shared resources, and social responsibility.

Support for the Local Economy: Builders, craftspeople, landscapers, and small businesses all benefit from a new, locally sourced housing option.

We Are Asking For:
A revision of local zoning laws to permit tiny homes (under 500 sq. ft.) as permanent dwellings.
Creation of pilot programs or designated zones for tiny home developments or ADUs.
Streamlined permitting processes to reduce barriers to responsible tiny home construction.
Community input sessions to explore how best to incorporate tiny homes while preserving the character of the North Fork.

We believe tiny homes can be part of a more inclusive, sustainable future for the North Fork — one where everyone has a place to call home.
