Petition to Support Property Owners' Rights & Eliminate Automatic Tenure in Rental Housing

Petition to Support Property Owners' Rights and Eliminate Automatic Tenure in Rental Housing
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the erosion of property owners' rights in our rental housing system. Recent legal precedents, such as the Small Claims Court ruling preventing a property owner from occupying their own property, underscore a troubling trend where temporary tenants are granted undue authority over property owners.
The concept of automatic tenure, where tenants gain significant rights simply by occupying a property, undermines the fundamental rights of property owners and disrupts the balance in our rental market. While the government should be responsible for providing housing to those in need, the current system holds homeowners responsible for solving the government-created housing crisis and grants tenants greater authority than property owners themselves.
Therefore, we call upon the Provincial government to take immediate action and End Automatic Tenure:
· When tenants decide they want to end the tenancy, they have a right to do so with proper notice.
· When property owners decide they want to end the tenancy, they should have the comparable rights to do so.
· If the government sees a need to provide tenants with tenure, they should do so.
This change will restore fairness and balance between property owners and tenants, giving the same rights to both parties.
Every property owner deserves the undeniable right to choose who lives in their home. This basic freedom is not just a legal principle, but a cornerstone of our dignity and autonomy. Stripping away this right undermines the very essence of what it means to truly own and cherish a home.
By signing this petition, we urge our elected officials to prioritize the equal rights of tenants and property owners and implement policies that foster a fair and balanced rental housing market. Together, we can ensure that property owners have the authority to responsibly manage their properties while maintaining housing accessibility for all residents.
This petition is initiated by NSHPAC (Nova Scotia Small Housing Providers Advocacy Committee).
