The Issue
Issue: Expand Research and Treatment Options for People Living With PMOS (Formerly PCOS)
Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), is a complex endocrine and metabolic condition that affects millions of women worldwide. Although the condition has historically been associated with the ovaries, research has shown that PMOS involves much more than reproductive health—it affects the body’s hormones, metabolism, and long-term health.
Many people living with PMOS experience insulin resistance, which can contribute to weight gain, difficulty losing weight, elevated blood sugar, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, inflammation, hormonal imbalance, and irregular ovulation. These metabolic changes can also increase the risk of developing other serious health conditions, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver and can potentially lead to liver inflammation, scarring, and long-term liver complications.
Despite PMOS being strongly connected to metabolic dysfunction, many patients struggle to access treatments that address these underlying issues. GLP-1 medications have shown significant benefits in improving insulin sensitivity, blood sugar regulation, weight management, and metabolic health in other conditions. However, more research is needed to fully understand their potential role in treating PMOS.
We are asking the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), pharmaceutical companies, and medical researchers to prioritize clinical trials and evaluate whether GLP-1 medications can be a safe and effective treatment option for people living with PMOS.
People living with PMOS deserve access to treatments that address the full condition—not only the symptoms, but the underlying metabolic challenges that can affect their health, fertility, and quality of life.
