Petition to Support Community Creative Space: 8400 E US-290

Petition to Support Community Creative Space: 8400 E US-290
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are calling on the City of Austin to support and protect a vital creative community space, Gallery Hypnotica, at 8400 E US-290 in East Austin.
Gallery Hypnotica is owned and operated by Juno Black, and serves as an accessible hub for local artists, musicians and creatives. Many of them rely on independent, grassroots venues to share their work, connect with the community. We believe this is a key component of what sustains Austin’s cultural identity.
Over the past year, the owner has worked in good faith with the City to meet permitting requirements, despite the significant financial burden these requirements place on small businesses. Previously, the city granted provisional approval, allowing the space to operate while continuing toward compliance.
However, following a staffing change within the permitting department, that provisional approval was revoked. Since then, requirements have shifted repeatedly, creating an unstable and financially unsustainable situation. The current process is not only inconsistent, but risks shutting down a space that contributes meaningfully to the cultural and economic fabric of East Austin.
We urge the City of Austin and Natasha Harper-Madison to:
- Reinstate provisional approval or provide a reasonable path to compliance.
- Ensure consistency and transparency in permitting requirements
- Recognize and support the value of small, community-driven creative spaces.
Austin is known for its support of live music, art and independent culture. Spaces like this are essential to that identity and should be supported– not pushed out.
By signing this petition, we stand in support of preserving accessible and creative spaces in East Austin, namely, Gallery Hyponotica.
