Teachers in New Zealand hold a massive amount of trust and influence over their students, which naturally creates a big power imbalance. Right now, the law protects kids under 16, but relationships with older or recently graduated students are mostly left to school disciplinary rules rather than actual laws. This is a huge problem because a teacher’s emotional hold and authority don't just magically disappear on graduation day.

We need much stricter, clearer rules that completely ban teachers from dating current or recent students. Even if it isn't technically a crime, real-world cases show these situations still cause genuine harm. We want to close this loophole to protect young people and make sure no one can abuse their position of trust. Our main goal is that we are trying to strengthen the laws and policies around student teacher relationships during  and after school
