The Issue

To: Veolia North America , Nassau County Department of Public Works, Town of Hempstead Officials, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation ,Local Elected Officials

We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens of Bay Park, NY and surrounding communities, strongly oppose Veolia’s proposed plan to drill and construct sewage infrastructure along First Avenue as part of the Long Beach sewage line project.

Background

Veolia, under contract for Nassau County, is planning to drill along First Avenue in Bay Park as part of the Long Beach Water Reclamation project. While we understand the importance of upgrading wastewater systems, this proposed drilling presents a serious and immediate threat to the health, safety, environment, and quality of life for the residents of our community.

Our Concerns

 1. Environmental Impact

The proposed drilling site is located in close proximity to sensitive ecosystems, including the Hewlett Bay wetlands. Disruption from construction, potential spills, and increased runoff could cause irreparable damage to our local environment.

 2. Public Health and Safety

Heavy machinery, air and noise pollution, and potential exposure to hazardous waste pose unacceptable risks to residents—especially seniors, children, and individuals with respiratory issues.

 3. Infrastructure and Traffic Disruption

First Avenue is a residential street, ill-suited to support prolonged industrial activity. The plan would cause significant congestion, damage to roads, and potentially endanger pedestrians and cyclists who rely on this route daily.

 4. Lack of Community Input and Transparency

The planning and approval process has lacked meaningful engagement with the community. Many residents were not adequately informed or consulted prior to the project’s advancement.

 5. Alternative Routes Exist

There are less disruptive routes and locations available that should be prioritized before putting a burden on a densely populated residential street.

Our Demands

We respectfully demand that:

 • Veolia and Nassau County immediately halt any planned drilling on First Avenue in Bay Park;

 • A full independent environmental review be conducted before any further action is taken;

 • A public forum be scheduled to allow community members to voice concerns and receive transparent answers;

 • Alternative drilling routes be seriously evaluated with public input.

Conclusion

We are not against infrastructure improvement, but we demand that such projects prioritize the safety, health, and quality of life of local residents. First Avenue is not the appropriate location for this level of industrial activity. We stand united in our opposition and call for responsible, community-oriented planning.
