Petition to Stop Sales of Plots on the Paleolithic Indian Mounds in Maplewood Cemetery

The Issue

Last Wednesday, 4/4/25, I found a Paleolithic Skinning Stone near a field at the southwest corner of Maplewood Cemetery. Wednesday , 4/4/2025, I donated the ancient skinning stone to Anderson University.

The paleolithic era is also known as the Old Stone Age and extends from 3 million years ago to 10,000 years ago (with the receding of glacier of the most recent ice age) that covered most of Indiana.

The topography of the cemetery has the classic gentle mounds of other sites that cover the Midwest United States. Furthermore, at the extreme northeast corner of Maplewood Cemetery, there are 3 mounds that are common knowledge to local residents as Indian Mounds.  The Management has begun 'Marketing' this corner of the cemetery as a 'Natural' place to bury the remains of the cremated.  There are already a handful of plots containing the ashes of the deceased.

These reasons, make a strong case for an archaeological excavation to be carried out of these 3 mounds, which can be done by radar, as well as the southwest corner of the cemetery, which is the lowest section of the cemetery and flows toward the White River.

Maplewood Cemetery is 4 miles down stream the river from Mounds State Park.  It has long been known that Mounds State Park represents only 5% of the original extent of this particular Paleolithic settlement.

The most famous of the Mounds Builder Sites, is Cahokia, in Illinois.  A cursory observation indicates that the artifacts found there show a striking resemblence to Mayan artifacts found in Chichen Itzas in the Yucatan Peninsula and other sites in Central America, including Guatemala.  It seems a likelihood that the Mounds Builders of the Midwest United States are the ancestors of the Mayan people of southern North America.   Therefore, the people who once populated the MIdwest, could possibly be the ancestors of the Maya and once populated this area at the time of the OLD STONE AGE.   That, my friends, means the Mounds Builders built the mounds in Anderson, not in the Stone Age, but much earlier than that.  AT LEAST 8,000 BCE and likely earlier than that.

For the above reasons, I believe this site should first be excavated by Professional Archaeologists, before any further burials are allowed at this particular corner of the cemetery. If ypu agree that a professional excavation, using the latest, non-obtrusive radar technology needs to be done, please sign our petition.  We thank you --  Signed -- the concerned citizens of Anderson, Indiana.
