The Issue

To the Honorable Mayor and Members of the Monroe City Council,

We, the undersigned residents of Monroe, Georgia, respectfully petition our elected officials to immediately stop the approval of new subdivisions, housing projects, and apartment complexes.

The citizens of Monroe are happy with the current size of our community. Growth for the sake of growth is not progress when it undermines the safety, infrastructure, and character of the place we call home. It is the responsibility of our elected officials to prioritize the needs and well-being of Monroe’s current residents—not the interests of outside developers.

City leaders have stated that road safety and traffic congestion caused by new developments fall under the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). This position is unreasonable. GDOT does not have the same local knowledge of Monroe’s roads, neighborhoods, and daily challenges that our city officials do—or should. Deferring responsibility to GDOT creates dangerous traffic conditions and ignores the duty of local leadership to safeguard the residents who elected them.

We call on the Monroe City Council to:

  1. Halt all rezoning approvals and new development permits.
  2. Place the safety, quality of life, and wishes of Monroe’s citizens above the push for unchecked growth.
  3. Take full responsibility for planning decisions that directly affect our residents every day.

The people of Monroe do not want uncontrolled expansion. We value the size, character, and livability of our city as it stands today. We ask you, our elected representatives, to honor the voice of your community and stand with the citizens who entrusted you with this responsibility.

Respectfully submitted,
