Petition to Shoalhaven City Council: Demand for Transparency and Accountability Regarding Sustainability Projects
Petition Reason:
We, the undersigned ratepayers of Shoalhaven City, express our concerns regarding the financial implications and lack of transparency associated with the sustainability projects and agreements established by the previous mayor and council. The Shoalhaven City Council's commitment to initiatives such as the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy has significant costs that directly impact our community.
1. Lack of Transparency: There has been insufficient public disclosure regarding government decisions related to climate action and sustainability. Freedom of Information (FOI) requests often reveal a lack of comprehensive data on the contracts and agreements executed on our behalf.
2. Unchecked Overreach: The council’s sustainability initiatives impose financial burdens through excessive fees and regulations without engaging in meaningful public consultation. These burdens often place undue strain on local ratepayers.
3. Corporate Influence & Corruption: We are concerned that the prioritisation of corporate interests in sustainability policies undermines the needs of ordinary citizens, leading to potential financial mismanagement in council expenditures.
4. Misuse of Public Funds: Examples of mismanagement, such as previous scandals, raise alarms about the accountability of funds allocated for sustainability projects. Without clear oversight, we fear that our ratepayers' money may be misused.
5. Local Priorities Need Attention: We call for the council to redirect its focus towards solving local problems. Issues such as repairing roads, managing waste, maintaining drainage systems, and improving car parks must take precedence over global targets handed down by international bodies like the United Nations or initiatives related to Green Energy policies. The council should address the immediate needs of our community instead of chasing unattainable global goals.
Petition Request:
We, the undersigned, therefore call upon Shoalhaven City Council to take immediate action on the following:
1. Mandate Transparency: Require full disclosure of all contracts, agreements, policy changes, and expenditures related to sustainability projects.
2. Strengthen Accountability: Establish independent oversight mechanisms to ensure financial accountability and address any issues of corruption relating to public funds.
3. Require Public Consultation: Implement legally binding consultation processes for all major sustainability policies and regulations to ensure that residents' voices are heard.
4. Limit Corporate Influence: Reassess any agreements made that may favour corporate interests over the needs of the community; ensure that policies align with the best interests of Shoalhaven's residents.
5. Enforce Spending Caps: Establish caps on expenditure related to sustainability projects to protect ratepayers from excessive costs and misallocation of funds.
6. Prioritise Local Issues: Shift focus back to local concerns such as road maintenance, rubbish collection, drainage repairs, and car park improvements. It is essential that the council prioritises solving local problems rather than engaging in global initiatives and commitments that do not directly benefit our community.
In conclusion, we urge the Shoalhaven City Council to act decisively regarding these matters. Transparency and community engagement are essential to fostering trust and ensuring that our council operates in the best interests of its residents. Let’s work together to secure a sustainable future for our community without compromising our financial integrity.
Thank you for considering our request for immediate action.
We the ratepayers look forward to hearing back the truth beyond this all once and for all.
