Why this petition matters

Started by Anuj Bindal

Project Homekey is a housing project that seeks to convert a Best Western motel in San Jose into a permanent homeless shelter for a minimum of 55 years.  This project will cost San Jose tax-payers $3.2M immediately and many millions more every year.

While we all sympathize with the needs of our homeless brothers and sisters, the residents of San Jose have done more than their fair share by hosting over 90% of all homeless accommodations in Santa Clara county.  Other cities in Santa Clara county like Palo Alto, Los Altos also need to step-in and do their part by providing supportive housing for our homeless brethren.

We have a concern that this project will over-burden San Jose residents and put stress on public health, education and tax revenue which is already under pressure due to covid-19 and other homeless accommodations.

This project is being imposed on the people of San Jose without their input and without public participation. A project of this size requires full transparency on the part of elected officials. It requires public hearings and the full involvement of local residents who will be impacted by this project.

The City of San Jose and its residents must have a say in this matter. Adding new people to the area without an open discussion about the issue defies the principles of representative government.
