Petition to Review and Change School Boundaries for Oakridge Meadows Community

The Issue

To: York Region District School Board Trustees

We, the undersigned residents of Oakridge Meadows, respectfully petition for a review and change of school boundaries for our community. Despite being located in Richmond Hill, our secondary school is currently designated as King City Secondary School, which poses significant inconvenience and hardship for families with children.

Reasons for Requesting a Change:

1. Unreasonable Commute Time: The distance to King City Secondary School is 12.7 kilometers, taking 16 minutes in non-peak hours, compared to 5.5 kilometers and 8 minutes to Richmond Green Secondary School. This excessive commute time will impact families' daily routines and productivity.

2. Inconsistent School Boundary Maps: The current maps show that Markham residents are eligible to attend Richmond Green SS, while Richmond Hill residents in Oakridge Meadows are not. This inconsistency is unfair and illogical.

3. Property Tax Discrepancy: As residents of Richmond Hill, we pay property taxes to the city, not King City. It is unreasonable to assign our children to a school outside our municipality.

4. Misinformation from Builders: When purchasing homes in Oakridge Meadows, we were informed by builders that Richmond Green SS was our designated school. This information influenced our decision to buy in this community.

Request:

We urge the York Region District School Board to reconsider the school boundaries for Oakridge Meadows and assign Richmond Green Secondary School as our designated secondary school. We do not accept King City SS as a temporary or permanent solution.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
