Petition to return the Broadbeach Art & Craft Market to Kurrawa Park.

Petition: SAVE THE LEGACY OF THE BROADBEACH MARKET:

Moving the Broadbeach Art and Craft Market from Kurrawa Park to Pratten Park has been a devastating blow for most stall holders/artisans.

The market has lost considerable foot traffic and visibility from the main tourist precinct and access to Broadbeach visitors.

This has resulted in the loss of 30-40 permanent stall holders, a much smaller market and revenue losses for stall holders because of low patronage at Pratten Park.

Collective attempts by market management and stall holders to promote and advertise the new location are not working.

We understand the Council at its sole discretion can move the Market at any time, especially when there are major events booked at Kurrawa Park, or it is under repair.

However, relocating the Broadbeach beachfront market permanently to Pratten Park, would require more public infrastructure and investment, whilst Kurrawa Park sits empty; which makes little sense and causes distress for stall holders.

Kurruwa Park is the preferred location by stall holders/artisans for the beachfront market in Broadbeach because it is on the "Ant Trail" - from the Broadbeach Mall to the Kurrawa beach boardwalk. It is easily accessible and more appealing for visitors and already has significant public infrastructure including:

  • Water - multiple water fountains & taps in the park
  • Multiple taps & showers on the board walk
  • Brand new amenities block with disabled access
  • Amenities block at the north end of Kurrawa Park
  • Plenty of tall shady trees
  • Multiple electricity boxes
  • Plenty of seating, tables, and undercover BBQ areas
  • Public safety cameras & regular police patrols
  • Wide path access around the whole Park
  • Plenty of open space for shared access
  • Safer loading and unloading zones with bollards for protection
  • A wide pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic lights for direct access to the Broadbeach mall, shops and supermarkets for visitors
  • Direct access to undercover parking, more amenities and air conditioning for the elderly and vulnerable

To save the Broadbeach market, we the undersigned respectfully request:

As the Gold Coast City Council drafts a new permit and before it is signed, please urgently reinstate the Broadbeach Art & Craft Market to its long-standing home in Kurrawa Park;

  • With the use of Pratten Park as a secondary location only when it is not possible to set up in Kurrawa Park due to major events or park repairs.

With council’s assistance, we can ensure a safe, accessible and successful community-based event for all - showcasing local Art & Craft - and ensure the survival of this cultural and heritage asset of many decades, which is loved by locals and tourists alike.

Thank you for considering our request and helping us to protect the legacy of the Broadbeach Art & Craft market.
