The Issue

To The CSArts-SGV Student Body,

If you are a senior, or will eventually be a senior and apply to college, this affects you.

Our school has placed restrictions on teachers to help students with college applications. This includes asking teachers questions about the application process, getting help with next steps, and asking teachers to give feedback on college essays.

We believe students should have the freedom to ask trusted teachers for help.

Our counselors are extremely important, but there are only three counselors serving more than 1,000 students (approx. 466 students per counselor). They already have a lot of students depending on them for support. Having teachers as another resource could make it easier for students to get help when they need it.

Our teachers have gone through the college application process themselves. Some have bachelor's, master's, and even doctoral degrees. Some teachers have also taught senior classes or seminars that helped students with the college process. This experience can be valuable, and we don't belive students should be prevented from asking them for guidance.

We are not asking teachers to do our applications for us. We are asking to be able to get advice, ask questions, and receive reasonable feedback from teachers who are willing to help.

College applications are already stressful enough. Students should not feel like they have nowhere to turn when they have a question.

What we're asking for:
We want CSArts students to have more resources, not fewer.

We are asking the school to reconsider these restrictions and allow students to seek reasonable college application guidance from trusted teachers while continuing to use counselors for professional college advising.

If you agree that students should have the ability to seek help from teachers during the college application process, please sign this petition.
